REVIEWS:

Reviewers of wines are often wine judges able to savour wines without necessarily swallowing. After observing , swirling, sniffing and tasting, the professional reviewer will assess a wine then spit into a spittoon . A judges ability to forcefully and accurately hit the spittoon bucket while mindfully cogitating upon the wine has become a metaphor for their ability to assess and concisely express the virtues of a wine.

"In this game , Reds pack power and unafraid to score"

Kominos is owned by Tony and Mary Comino, who bought the winery from Tony's parents on its 21st vintage ( it was founded in 1976 ), and it came within a cat's whisker of a five star rating this year. Kominos ( www.kominoswines.com )makes 40,000 cases led by shiraz , the 2005 Reserve (94 points $30) and the standard ( 91 points, $24 ).Both are medium to full bodied, the reserve having a finer tannin structure, with more expression of both red and black fruits and a little more oak evident. The standard has strong texture, fine but insistent tannins running through the blackberry fruit of the palate, and is a serious well made wine.

Four ½ stars Reserve Granite Belt Merlot 2005.
Youthful purple colour of very good depth : a vibrant young wine : good balance, depth and structure, finishing with appropriately fine savoury tannins. Rating 90

Four ½ stars Reserve Granite Belt Cabernet Sauvignon 2005. Very powerful and youthful to the point of rebellious; plush blackcurrant fruit then firm earthy ,slightly astringent tannins. All it needs is time for these components to come together. Rating 90.

Four stars Granite Belt Sauvignon Blanc 2004. Solid wine, now in a lock -down phase on the bouquet and palate, with gooseberry/herb/tropical nuances fighting for their liberty.Rating 88

Four stars Granite Belt Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2004. Zesty, tangy citrus and mineral characters throughout: long bone dry finish. Rating 88
